From a distance it looks like a snowy hillside, but up close it is warm water flowing over gleaming white terraces. Pamukkale – the “cotton castle” – and the ancient city of Hierapolis above it form one of Turkey’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Because the drive from Alanya is around 380 km, our tour takes two relaxed days with a night in a thermal hotel.
Day 1: Salda Lake, travertines and Hierapolis
The bus crosses the Taurus Mountains with a breakfast stop in Korkuteli and a photo stop at Salda Lake, famous for its turquoise water and white shores – often called the “Maldives of Turkey”. In the afternoon you walk barefoot across the travertine terraces, formed over thousands of years as calcium-rich thermal water cooled and left limestone behind. Above them lie the ruins of Hierapolis, a Roman spa city with a grand theatre and one of the largest necropolises in Anatolia. If you like, you can swim among ancient columns in the Antique Pool, also known as Cleopatra’s Pool (extra charge). In the evening you check into a thermal hotel for dinner and a relaxing soak.
Day 2: Red Water and the journey home
After breakfast you visit the iron-rich Red Water springs of Karahayıt, whose minerals colour the rocks red, followed by a village mosque and a traditional carpet workshop where you can watch the art of hand-weaving. Then the bus heads back to the coast with a lunch stop and a panoramic break, arriving in Alanya in the late afternoon.
