From the coast to the Anatolian plateau
Cappadocia is more than 500 km from Konakli – around eight hours on the road – so the bus sets off long before sunrise; we confirm your exact pickup time after booking. Departures are on Tuesdays and Fridays. After a breakfast stop, the road leaves the Taurus behind and crosses the wide Anatolian steppe, until the first rock cones appear on the horizon.
Ancient volcanoes covered this region with ash that hardened into soft tuff, and wind and water have shaped it into pillars, cones and canyons ever since. Your first visit leads underground, into a city of tunnels, storerooms and stables cut several floors deep, where villagers once hid from raiders. Pigeon Valley follows, its rock faces dotted with dovecotes – the droppings were once collected to fertilise the vineyards – then a walk among the fairy chimneys and a panorama at the foot of Uçhisar Castle, the highest point around. In Avanos potters work the red clay of the Kızılırmak, Turkey’s longest river, and a Turkish delight shop offers a sweet tasting before dinner at your 4-star hotel; an evening show is optional. On day two, balloons rise over the valleys at dawn – watch them from a viewpoint or float above them yourself (both optional). After breakfast, one more viewpoint and a carpet workshop, the bus returns via Konya, reaching Konakli in the evening.
Before you set off
- Bring a passport or ID card – it is needed for the hotel check-in.
- Pack a warm jacket: Cappadocia’s mornings and evenings are far cooler than Konakli’s.
- Want to fly in a balloon? Say so early – flights depend on the wind and are confirmed the evening before.
- The standard package covers dinner and breakfast; full board adds lunch on both days.
Transfers from your hotel in Konakli, the guide, the night in a 4-star hotel with dinner and breakfast, the underground city entrance and the workshop visits are included, and you pay on the first day. Not ready for two days on the road? Consider the Demre, Myra and Kekova day trip from Konakli.
