From the coast the bus climbs over the Taurus to Korkuteli for breakfast and continues across the high plateau of the Lakes District to Salda Lake, whose white shores and turquoise water are often likened to the Maldives – and whose mineral deposits have even been studied by scientists preparing missions to Mars.
After a lunch break of your choosing, you take off your shoes for the travertines of Pamukkale – the “cotton castle”, built up over millennia by warm, calcium-rich springs. Above the terraces spreads Hierapolis, a Roman spa town with a great theatre and a vast necropolis; together they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Anyone who likes can swim in the Antique Pool among fallen marble columns (entrance extra). The evening belongs to the thermal hotel: dinner, an overnight stay and time for its warm pools. On the second morning you visit the iron-red springs of Karahayıt, a village mosque and a carpet workshop where you can watch hand-weaving, before the bus heads back over the mountains and drops you in Konakli in the late afternoon.
